Day 1Sat 27 Jun 2026

Brussels โ†’ Ulm

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช Brussels โ†’ ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Ulm ยท ~600 km, a full day on the motorway
Ulm Minster
Ulm, watched over by the Minster โ€” the world's tallest church steeple.

First leg out of Brussels โ€” a long, steady haul through Germany. We called it a day in Ulm and checked into the ibis budget. Dinner was burgers at QMUH in town: exactly what a driving day earns you.

๐Ÿ’ก Trivia: Ulm Minster has the worldโ€™s tallest church steeple โ€” 161.5 m, 768 steps to the viewing platform. And a local baby named Albert Einstein was born in Ulm in 1879.
Day 2Sun 28 Jun 2026

Ulm โ†’ Val di Fassa

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Ulm โ†’ ๐Ÿ”๏ธ Val di Fassa (Dolomites) ยท ~390 km, over the Brenner
Lago di Carezza
Lago di Carezza โ€” the emerald lake under the Latemar, with the Rosengarten behind.

Second day on the road: down through Bavaria, over the Brenner, and into the Dolomites at last. We set up at Camping Miravalle in Val di Fassa โ€” our first mountain basecamp โ€” where we cooked up burritos on the little Camping Gaz stove.

Highlight of the day: catching Lago di Carezza on the way in โ€” the emerald water under the Latemar was, in a word, beautiful.
๐Ÿ’ก Trivia: Ladin legend calls Carezza the โ€œrainbow lakeโ€: a sorcerer flung a rainbow across the water to charm a nymph โ€” when she fled he smashed it, and the colours sank into the lake. Fitting, given Val di Fassa is one of the last strongholds of the Ladin language.
Day 3Mon 29 Jun 2026

Marmolada โ€” Queen of the Dolomites

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Day trip from Val di Fassa ยท up to Punta Rocca (3,265 m)
Marmolada
Marmolada (3,343 m) โ€” the glaciered โ€œQueen of the Dolomitesโ€.

Up the funivia in stages to Punta Rocca โ€” out onto the terrace at 3,265 m with the glacier below and a sea of peaks in every direction. At the Serauta mid-station we visited the Museo della Grande Guerra, telling the story of the Italian Alpini and the Austro-Hungarians who fought right here on the ice. Cloud built on the way down and the rain set in.

๐Ÿ’ก Trivia: Marmolada was a WWI front line: from 1916 Austro-Hungarian troops carved a โ€œCity of Iceโ€ (Cittร  di Ghiaccio) โ€” kilometres of tunnels and barracks inside the moving glacier. The Serauta museum is one of the highest war museums in Europe.

We waited out the worst over a long lunch at Rifugio Fedaia: venison with polenta, salsiccia with fried cheese, and a strudel to finish. ๐ŸฅŸ

The evening cleared into a treat: a tasting of four house beers at Rampeรจr Birrificio Osteria in Campitello di Fassa, then back to camp to cook Speck with fried eggs for dinner.

Day 4Tue 30 Jun 2026

Catinaccio on foot โ€” Rifugio Roda di Vael

๐Ÿฅพ Passo Costalunga (Paolina) ยท trails 539 ยท 549 ยท 548 ยท 6
Catinaccio (Rosengarten) โ€” the walls above Rifugio Roda di Vael.
Catinaccio (Rosengarten) โ€” the walls above Rifugio Roda di Vael.

We started at Lago di Carezza โ€” the sight is genuinely stunning, but it was mobbed with tour groups and the car park wanted ~โ‚ฌ5.50 for under an hour, so we fled, a little horrified, to the quieter Paolina chairlift car park at Passo Costalunga.

From there a proper hike: up trails 539 โ†’ 549 under the Rosengarten walls to Rifugio Roda di Vael for lunch โ€” canederli di ortiche (nettle dumplings) and a gloriously heavy Kaiserschmarren to finish. We came down via trail 548 to Passo Costalunga, then the last stretch on trail 6 beside the road back to the car.

Reward of the day: a well-earned spa at QC Terme Dolomiti โ€” pool after pool of hot water, and an aperitivo so generous it doubled as dinner. A perfect last night at the camping.
Day 5Wed 1 Jul 2026

Val di Fassa โ†’ Modena

โ›บโ†’๐Ÿ™๏ธ Camp struck ยท via Lago di Garda ยท storm at Mantova
Lazise on Lago di Garda โ€” under a darkening, pre-storm sky.
Lazise on Lago di Garda โ€” under a darkening, pre-storm sky.

We packed up the tent and all the kit and pointed the car south for Modena. A lunch stop in pretty Lazise on Lake Garda served up lake specialities: spaghetti alla chitarra with lake sardines, and lavarello (lake whitefish) โ€” plus a magnificent strawberry gelato. The view over Lago di Garda was cloudy, a storm clearly building.

It broke over us during a rest stop in Mantova. We rolled into Modena and slept under a roof for the first time in days.

Day 6Thu 2 Jul 2026

Modena โ†’ Roccasecca โ€” journey's end

๐Ÿ Last leg south ยท via Arezzo ยท arrive Roccasecca (Lazio)
Arezzo ยท Piazza Grande โ€” Tuscan folklore and sloping stone.
Arezzo ยท Piazza Grande โ€” Tuscan folklore and sloping stone.

The final day on the road. We left Modena in the morning and broke the drive in Arezzo โ€” a beautiful Tuscan city full of folklore โ€” where lunch was a mix of game birds, pheasant and goose. By dinner we reached our destination, Roccasecca. ๐Ÿ

๐Ÿ Arrived in Roccasecca (Lazio) โ€” buon viaggio! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น
